Little Bittern!

Back in October, like many Melbourne birders, I spent some time standing around a reedy pond in an industrial estate in Braeside.  And then obviously took a while to post about it...

Anyway, an Australian Little Bittern wasn't being as skulky as usual so was getting quite a few visitors. Luckily, when I went to have a look I didn't have to wait too long for the female bird to show herself and I had great views of her preening and enjoying a bit of sun before she snuck back into the reeds.  And yes! There was phonescoping!

A male Little Bittern was also spotted hanging out in the same pond so hopefully that means there are some cute baby bitterns on their way!  (Edit: Still present as of 07/12/17!)

Hi!

On the way out I caught up with a nice little echidna I'd come across on the way in working its way along the fenceline. I was shunned the first time, but on the second meeting I was allowed to say a quick hello before it got back to its echidna business.

  1. I had to google "echidna" as I had no idea if that thing was an animal or a lost sea urchin. So cool! And nice phonescopes of the bittern!
